The Journey - New Zealand
Coromandel
A major summer getaway destination. With it's rugged mountains, lush greenery and mesmerising coast lines it isn't hard to see why the country flock here in the summer holidays. The area is mostly known for the post card picture Cathedral Cove set along the pacific ocean. It's neighboring Hot Water beach is also a popular attraction.
Cathedral Cove
The view point for the start of the Cathedral coast track is beautiful. Within 20 minutes you will walk over flat ground and a small flight of stairs to reach the famous Cathedral Cove beach. We set off on our stroll around sunset and it was amazing, not a sole around.
Cathedral Cove
It's hard not to be amazed by this natural rock formation. The views from either side of the cove are equally impressive, not to forget the view inside also. Regular kayak trips are available to see the cove but we opted for the free walking option
Tairua
On the east coast of the Peninsula you have the town of Tairua. Being just a half hour drive from the famous Hot Water beach and Cathedral Cove the town is the perfect stop over. At just 179m tall and easily accessible by car Mt Paku is a must do climb in the area. The view of the ocean and islands near by is pretty impressive.
Coromandel Town
Located on the western side of the Coromandel Peninsula this small settlement is rather pretty. The main attraction is the Driving Creek Railway. A great excursion taking you way up high in the mountains giving you surreal panoramic views of the forest and beyond
Coromandel Town
This one hour train journey up the hills and deep into the forest is great fun for all the family. With commentary along the way from your driver you may even learn a thing or two. Once at the top of the railway track you are treated to a great viewing platform looking out over the mountains and ocean.
The Pinnacles
Like a lot of New Zealand the Coromandel region is dominated by mountains and rain forest. At nearly 900m high the Pinnacles Range is pretty much inhabited making it a perfect hiking destination. Although we didn't walk any of the great mountain tracks there is still other ways of seeing magnificent views
