New Plymouth

Set along the wild west coast of the North Island this small city has one or two points of interest. The biggest and most noticeable attraction in the area has got to be the great Mt Taranaki in the distance, this 2518 meter giant is actually an active volcano! Due to bad weather and unclear skies we weren't able to get that mind blowing picture a lot of travelers seem to take whilst in the Taranaki district. Never fear as we have a range of decent pictures taken around the city. This shot was taken at the top of a small hill located in Paritutu Centennial Park, just a short drive from the city center. The walk to the summit of this small viewing platform is almost vertical up steep rocks with just a chain to hold onto, not the safest type of stairway but it does the job.

Just a glimpse of New Plymouth's coastal walkway. This is a 12.7km walkway which is a popular track in the area, you could even cycle along it if you don't quite have the time.

The 'Wind Wand' is a piece of art close to the city center, created by artist Len Lye this 48 meter fibre glass bendy pole is an icon in the local area

Strolling around the city you will come across a fair few pieces of wall art, this is great one of Mt Taranaki

Some are more explicit than others :O
