Lake Taupo
Lake Taupo
With an area of 616 km² Lake Taupo is the biggest lake in New Zealand and Australia, it is roughly the size of Singapore! Whilst in the adventure town of Taupo many activities are available such as cycling, sailing and mountaineering.
Maori Carvings
Only accessible by boat these famous carvings are a big attraction whilst visiting this great lake side town. Although their are many rumors of these carvings been made hundreds of years ago they are all false. Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell led a team of 4 artists and together they sculpted the carvings over four years from 1976 to 1980.
Taupo
Being just an hour or so drive from the famous Ski Resort of Mt Ruapehu this town can be an ideal place to spend the night before heading out to the mountain for a epic trip snow boarding or skiing. There is a good selection of shops & restaurants along the lake front and even those greasy takeaways for those on a budget. On a clear day the great mountains can be seen in the distance.
Lake Taupo
The two main boat excursions heading out onto the lake will be either by small ship or yacht, both of which offer a 2 hour trip to the Maori Carvings. The two are near enough the same price, for $45 we opted for the Ernest Kemp Cruise which comes with complimentary coffee/tea and biscuits.
Huka Falls
Splashing out 200,000 liters of water a second the legendary Huka Falls is a major tourist attraction in the area. Seeing all that crystal clear water being flung down a stream at lightening speeds is an epic sight!
