This part of the country is home to roughly 3.6 million people, that may seem like hardly nothing but when compared to the South Island's mere 1.05 million it is a lot more. Having traveled both Island's in the space of a year the question of 'Which island did you like the most? is extremely hard to answer as both have their pro's and cons and are equally as impressive.
